We’ve all heard the old saying ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’. But this is a slight twist on that, ‘it’s who knows you’.
The old solution for this was traditional networking which conjures up ideas of wine, cheese and small talk.
So what is a new solution? How can you make people stand up and take notice of you? The answer is vlogging. Think of it as a video diary, but in a professional way.

Here is a typical professional (i.e. not a Kardashian) vlog structure (Source: UON Grad Andrew Stapleton)
For your first video consider this structure:
1.Hook – in the first 3-5 seconds grab the attention of someone scrolling through their feed
2.Explain what your audience will learn today by watching your video
3.Describe the problem that you will help people solve in this video
4.Your personal experience in solving the problem for yourself or your customers
5.Call to action and ask people to comment on your video or like it.
……………………………….
It will take some planning, but it’s back yourself, you can do this!
Why vlog?
- Shows people that you actually know your area of study and that you are committed to it
- Starts conversations which may extend past your network
- Builds relationships and trust with your followers which can lead to job offers
- You build enterprise skills such as Digital Literacy, Presentation, Communication and Creativity.
Today I took the leap and did my first vlog, will you give it a try?
Happy vlogging,
Greg
