NSW Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetship Program
The Aboriginal Allied Health Cadetship Program is one of the many strategies to increase the number of Aboriginal allied health professionals working in the NSW Public Health sector and provide better health services to our Aboriginal communities. The NSW Ministry of Health offers cadetship positions for Aboriginal people living in NSW who are studying, or intending to study, an allied health undergraduate degree. The Program involves Aboriginal students undertaking full-time study in an undergraduate allied health course while being employed in a NSW Public Health facility.
A Cadetship offers:
• A study allowance of $600 per fortnight (minus tax) commencing at the beginning of each academic year, for a maximum of up to 40 weeks. Cadets also receive $500 each semester for books and equipment
• A work placement of up to 12 weeks in paid employment in an allied health role
• The opportunity to consolidate theoretical knowledge and to practise clinical skills in a health facility during a work placement period
• The opportunity to work in a local public hospital or Justice Health facility while completing allied health studies
• An income while studying
• Support and mentoring by professionals – both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal – already working within health settings
• The opportunity to develop both cultural and allied health links
• Ongoing employment upon successful completion of the cadetship
Allied Health scholarships
As part of its ongoing commitment to maintain and improve the health status of rural communities, NSW Health provides financial assistance to allied health students via the NSW Rural Allied Health Scholarships, NSW Rural and Metropolitan Allied Health Clinical Placement Grants and NSW Rural Allied Health Postgraduate Scholarships. NSW Health also provides scholarships specifically through the Australian Rotary Health for Aboriginal Medical and Allied Health Scholarships.
